In order to insure consistency and quality, Duke Henry IV of Bavaria enacted the famous Reinheitsgebot, or purity law in 1516. It was the world's first regulation for food production and is still valid today. Reinheitsgbot specified that only hops, yeast, malt, and water can be used to make beer - nothing else. There are no additives, preservatives, or spices allowed. Reinheitsgbot set the standard for the quality of German Beer that has been unequaled in half a millennium.
