Vulcan Basement Waterproofing Company is an American home improvement company
that was founded in 1945 in Detroit, Michigan and expanded into other states in
1949. Vulcan specializes in basement water control for existing structures
in both residential and commercial markets. The company pioneered basement
water control at a time when smaller gas and electric furnaces replaced large
coal and wood-burning heating plants. This resulted in additional space
that could be utilized by homeowners and businesses if the space could be kept
dry. As the only company specializing in basement waterproofing at that
time, Vulcan set out to find a way to keep basements dry. Early on it was
believed the water that entered the basement all came in through the walls so
with little success, attempts were made to control the water that came in only
through the walls. This was usually done by means of excavating the ground
outside the structure down to the footing level and coating the walls with hot
tar or “pitch” and also by patching any visible cracks from the inside.
Though water was temporarily stopped from entering through the walls, basements
still leaked. It was found that water also enters the basement due to
“hydrostatic pressure” or still water pressure. This is the same pressure
felt when trying to push a bucket into a pool of water. When water enters
a structure as a result of hydrostatic pressure, it usually comes in through the
cove area (where the wall and floor meet), the floor and very low on the walls
below ground level. Through many years of research to combat this problem,
Vulcan invented and perfected the interior pressure relief system that is more
commonly and incorrectly referred to as a “French Drain”. French drains
are designed to accept and channel surface water away whereas an interior
pressure relief system is designed to channel ground water away and eliminate
the pressure from rising water which is exerted against the foundation and
forcing the water in. Vulcan is a privately held corporation and has been
family owned and operated since 1952 and does business in several states where
basements are found.
